Flourishing Lens

Framing meaningful, ethical questions that centre justice and inclusion

A normative lens grounded in our philosophy and values that shapes how we frame problems, select methods and interpret findings to ensure research is ethically anchored. Where the Ecosystem Model tells us what flourishing is, the Lens shapes how we look at every research question.

Overview

What is the Flourishing Lens?

The Flourishing Lens is the set of values and commitments we bring to every study. It is not a method in itself but a way of seeing — one that keeps human flourishing, justice and inclusion at the centre of the choices researchers make.

Applied consistently, the Lens changes which questions we consider worth asking, whose perspectives we treat as essential, and how we judge whether findings are meaningful. It guards against research that is technically sound but ethically hollow.

By making our values explicit and repeatable, the Lens ensures that integrity is designed into our work from the very first question rather than added on at the end.

Key Elements

The Building Blocks

The core elements that give this component its shape and power within our system.

Framing Problems

We define questions that matter for flourishing, foregrounding the needs of those most often overlooked.

Selecting Methods

We choose approaches that are rigorous and respectful, fit to the people and contexts they study.

Interpreting Findings

We read results through the values of justice and inclusion, asking what they mean for real lives.

Ethical Anchoring

We hold every decision to standards of integrity, consent, dignity and accountability.

Reflexive Awareness

We stay conscious of our own assumptions and power, checking how they shape what we see.

Value Alignment

We keep the work aligned with WRN's philosophy, so purpose is never lost in process.

In Practice

Principles That Guide Us

These commitments turn the Flourishing Lens from an idea into a working part of how we do research every day.

We frame problems around flourishing, not merely around what is easy to measure.

We centre justice and inclusion as criteria for good research, not optional extras.

We choose methods for their fit and fairness, not only their convenience.

We interpret findings responsibly, mindful of who is affected by the conclusions we draw.

How we look decides what we find. The Flourishing Lens makes sure we look with justice, inclusion and care.

WRN Research Philosophy

The Lens takes the vision set out in the Ecosystem Model and applies it to how we actually research. The questions and evidence it produces feed the Change Pathway, and the reflection it demands is sustained through the Research Cycle.
